President Trump is nominating federal appeals court Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court.
In a primetime speech at the White House last night, Trump said the 53-year old Kavanaugh has impeccable credentials and is committed to equal justice under the law.
If confirmed by the Senate, the conservative Kavanaugh would replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy.
Indiana Democratic Senator Joe Donnelly says its part of his job to thoroughly consider Supreme Court nominees.
He says he will take the same approach as he did with a previous Supreme Court vacancy.
Donnelly says he will carefully review and consider the record and qualifications of Judge Kavanaugh.
Meanwhile, Republican Indiana Senator Todd Young says Judge Kavanaugh is a well-respected judge with a strong record of honoring the Constitution and upholding the rule of law.
He says he’s looking forward to conducting a thorough and objective review of Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination over the coming weeks, and is hopeful that his colleagues will give him the same courtesy.
