New legislation in Illinois raises the fines for not switching lanes when a vehicle with flashing lights is on the side of the road.
Senator Tony Munoz of Chicago says with 16 state police troopers struck so far this year, they need to do something.
Under the bill, the fine will be 250 dollars for a first offense and 750 for a second offense.
An additional 250 dollar fee will be added on top of that to help pay for public education about the move over law.
Motorists who hit a first responder would face felony charges.
