Illinois Becomes First State to Require Mental Health Screenings for Students

By John Szink Aug 1, 2025 | 8:02 AM

Illinois is the first state in the nation to require mental health screenings for students.

Governor Pritzker has signed a bill that offers free mental health screening tools to Illinois public schools.

Under current Illinois law, screening every student each year isn’t required, making it difficult for districts to identify and address mental health issues that cause barriers to learning.

The new measure requires all school districts to offer mental health screenings to students enrolled in grades 3 through 12, at least once a year, beginning with the 2027-2028 school year.
