The driver of a coal truck died Tuesday afternoon after his truck ran off US 41 South in the area of Schenk Drive in Knox County.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office says 48-year-old Karl Case from West Salem, Illinois, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Case’s semitruck/trailer, loaded with coal, was southbound on 41 when it crossed the median and both northbound lanes before crashing into an embankment and coming to rest on its side in an adjacent cornfield.

The sheriff’s office says the preliminary investigation reveals Case may have had a medical issue before the crash.
