Red Cross Offers Thanksgiving Cooking Safety Tips

By John Szink Nov 24, 2025 | 12:31 PM

Heading into the holidays, the American Red Cross is warning that Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires in the U.S.

Cooking is the leading cause of home fires, and the Red Cross says most incidents happen because people leave food unattended.

Their top safety tip: Always stay in the kitchen when frying or broiling food.

If you must leave, turn off the stove.

The Red Cross also urges you to keep kids and pets at least three feet away from cooking areas and to keep anything flammable away from heat sources.
