On Roberto Clemente Day, the Cardinals have named Brendan Donovan their 2025 nominee for the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award presented by Capital One—an honor recognizing players who exemplify character, community leadership, and humanitarian spirit.

Roberto Clemente wasn’t just a Hall of Fame outfielder—he was a humanitarian whose life and death reshaped how baseball honors its heroes. Born in Puerto Rico, Clemente broke barriers for Latin American players and used his platform to serve communities in need. On December 31, 1972, he died in a plane crash while delivering aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua—a final act of service that became his legacy.

In 1973, Major League Baseball renamed its Commissioner’s Award in Clemente’s honor, creating a tradition that now spans generations. Each year, one player from every team is nominated, and the league-wide winner is announced during the World Series.

Donovan’s off-field contributions mirror the hard work and grace he brings to the diamond. From hosting kids through “Donovan’s Dugout” to supporting veterans via The Kaufman Fund and Team Red, White & Blue, his efforts span causes close to home and far-reaching. Mental health advocacy, Make-A-Wish events, and upcoming charity shoots and walks round out a year of service that’s as intentional as it is heartfelt.

“Roberto Clemente set the standard for what it means to be a player who gives back. It’s an incredible honor to be nominated for this award, and I’m grateful to have the opportunity to support causes that make a difference, especially those that serve our veterans and local communities,” Donovan said, reflecting on Clemente’s legacy and his own family’s military ties.

With six past Clemente Award winners [Adam Wainwright (2020), Yadier Molina (2018), Carlos Beltran (2013), Albert Pujols (2008), Ozzie Smith (1995) and Lou Brock (1975)], the Cardinals lead all MLB clubs in honoring players who give back. Fans can vote for Donovan at MLBTogether.com/clementeaward through September 28.
