Statewide Police Policy for Addressing Homelessness Takes Effect July 1

By John Szink Apr 22, 2026 | 7:23 AM

Governor Mike Braun is signing a new law aimed at addressing homelessness.

A ceremonial bill signing was held for Senate Enrolled Act 285, which will change how police respond to reports of people living in public spaces starting July 1st.

That’s when police departments begin following a statewide policy that makes camping and sleeping on public property illegal.

People who do not comply with the new law could face 60 days in jail or fines of up to 500-dollars, but a person cannot be convicted if there were no available shelter beds within five miles.
