Governor Unlikely to Suspend Gas Excise Tax

By John Szink Apr 28, 2026 | 10:55 AM

Indiana Governor Mike Braun is unlikely to suspend the state’s gas excise tax, despite calls from Democrats to do so.

The current tax holiday, which saves Hoosiers an estimated $50 million at the pump, may be extended beyond the May 8th deadline.

However, there are concerns about the impact on infrastructure funding if the tax holiday is prolonged.

Experts warn that gas prices could soar above $4 a gallon if the tax holiday is not extended, with the possibility of reaching $5 in the summer.
