The Owen County Sheriff’s Office says a deputy shot Friday during a welfare check near Spencer is expected to make a full recovery.

Sgt. Detective Nathan Martin was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital in stable condition.

The Owen County Sheriff’s Department said 58-year-old Wendell Hart opened fire on Martin, prompting the deputy to call for backup.

Later, Hart left his residence and pointed a firearm at additional officers, who shot him.

Hart was taken to a Bloomington hospital, then flown to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for further treatment.
