Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita has filed suit against the Indiana High School Athletic Association to eliminate a race-based quota on its Board of Directors.
The lawsuit targets IHSAA bylaws that reserve two of 19 board seats for “qualified minorities,” defined as “an individual other than a white male or female.”
The AG’s office says the quota has existed in some form since 1993 and requires nominating petitions to verify a candidate’s racial eligibility.
The suit asks the court to permanently block IHSAA from reserving seats based on race, prohibit future race-based allocations, and declare the current provisions a violation of state law.
Rokita said the office first demanded the change in April 23.
IHSAA declined to act immediately, saying it might consider bylaw changes in May of 2027.
