Indiana is seeing a surge in apprenticeships.

Governor Mike Braun announced the state added more than 10,600 new registered apprentices in the last federal fiscal year, the most in a decade and an 11 percent increase over the year before.

Plumbers, carpenters and electricians top the list of new apprentices, who earn a wage while learning on the job.

Indiana now has more than 27,000 active apprentices, fourth most in the nation.

Braun says the program helps workers boost their wages while giving employers skilled labor.
