Whiting Gas Refinery Outage Impacting Gas Price Spike

By John Szink May 1, 2026 | 11:07 AM

Indiana’s average gas price has rocketed up to four-dollars-80-cents a gallon, a dollar-ten higher than last week.

The price of crude oil is a big part of that, but the gas refinery in Whiting in northwest Indiana is a major factor as well.

The refinery has been shut down since Sunday night and is the main supplier of gasoline in the Great Lakes region.

GasBuddy’s Patrick DeHaan says it might be offline for a week or two and prices will remain very high as a result.
