Indiana’s Bureau of Motor Vehicles is preparing to roll out mobile driver’s licenses, giving Hoosiers a digital version of their physical ID.
The MDL would live in a secure app or a phone’s wallet and serve as another way to verify someone’s identity.
BMV officials told lawmakers the system uses biometrics and “liveness” checks to confirm the phone’s data matches BMV records.
They stressed it’s not a photo of a license, doesn’t give police access to a person’s phone, and isn’t trackable.
Plastic licenses will still be valid, but the BMV expects the digital option to launch within 18 months.
Twenty‑one states, including Arizona, California, Illinois, and Ohio, already offer mobile IDs.
