Democrat Beau Bayh has been elected Indiana Secretary of State, defeating Republican Max Engling late Tuesday night.
With about 90 percent of the vote counted, Bayh had more than 940,000 votes to Engling’s 787,000.
That’s just over 51 percent of the vote, including about 71 percent in Marion County.
Bayh is the first Democrat elected to statewide office in Indiana since 2012.
Republicans held the other statewide offices on the ballot.
Elise Nieshalla was reelected state comptroller, and Daniel Elliott was reelected state treasurer.
In the area’s legislative races, Republicans won every seat:
o Senate District 38: Greg Goode was reelected.
o House District 45: Kellie Streeter is the new state representative.
o House District 63: Amy Kippenbrock was elected.
o House District 64: Matt Hostettler won.
o House District 74: Cindy Ledbetter won.
The Indiana Republican Party’s supermajority in the state House is over.
The GOP still has a majority.
Democrats, however, have won enough races to end the supermajority the Republicans have held for the last 14 years.
